Members continue their work to enhance the language arts and literacy skills of early elementary students. In 2004, Assistance League of Northern Virginia established a new reading enhancement program for the first grade students identified as at-risk at Providence Elementary School. The chapter purchased tape recorders, recorded a library of books and prepared educational materials for the new books-on-tape program called Reading Express. This home-based reading program aims to increase students' at-home reading frequency and overall reading fluency, as well as increase a parents' participation in their children's reading development.
For the 2015-2016 school year members gave 510 tutoring sessions enhancing the language skills and reading comprehension of these at-risk students at Providence Elementary School in Fairfax, VA. We look forward to another productive school year in 2016-2017!
